Mekong Giant Banana Plant – Musa Itinerans – Very Cold Hardy
The Musa ‘Mekong Giant’ (Musa Itinerans Var. xishuangbannaensis), is a large, cold hardy banana that is a native that grows from the Mekong Delta to the Tibetan Plateau.
Growing to 15′-20′ tall in colder climates, this plant can reach 40′, and a 20″ diameter, in warmer climates.
The plant has large olive green leaves on top of a large, thick trunk with large Red and yellow flowers.
The fruit on this plant is purple, accenting the olive-green foliage and red-to-purple streaked trunk.
This Banana Plant can bring a tropical look to more cooler climate gardens, as it can over winter in freezing temperatures and come back again.
It can be used in borders, beds or containers.
